California Shitoryu Karate takes Gold at Nikkei Games

Each year over 3,000 competitors from 5 continents come together to compete in the Nikkei Games - a 3 week event put on by the Japanese-American community hosted at the Los Angeles Sports Center. Last Sunday saw the martial arts events in which competitors tested their skills against their peers in Karate, Kendo and Judo.

California Shitoryu Karate in Lake Elsinore sent a small team of 4 students to compete in the karate games, all whom were extremely competitive. The team members included Adrian & Phillip Edmundson, Nick Smith and Siobhan Gee – all coached by their instructor, Sensei Jason Stanley, 4th degree black belt.

With just a few months of training, Siobhan Gee (10 years) took first place earning a gold medal in kata (a prearranged sequence of karate movements), while Nick Smith (11 years) earned the silver medal in kumite (sparring).

"I couldn't believe it!" exclaimed Siobhan, "My first competition and I won a gold medal!"

California Shitoryu Karate is Lake Elsinore’s only traditional Japanese karate school founded in 2003 and has over 100 students, several who are taking an interest in the competitive side of the art.

The team is preparing for 3 upcoming events, September through November, with hopes of more gold to add to its medal stockpiles.
