The year was 1988.
It was 5:30pm like on any regular old Saturday in May. Nothing particular about it.
Yet this would be a day that would change my life forever.
I stood on the subway platform waiting.
With a gush of wind and a rumble from the darkness the train emerged. As I opened the doors two young thugs were beating an older man senseless. I can still hear the sickening thuds of their blows as he lay helpless.
I wanted to do something but what could a scrawny 16 year old kid do against two bigger, stronger assailants? I was terrified.
It was that day I decided I would never be a victim like that...
